flopping on the deck of a boat
watching as the others
happily bob and float
i’m like a fish out of water
scared to open my mouth
lest the wrong things
are what comes out

flapping my stupid gills
trying to manifest my
non-existent people skills

separated from my kin
but maybe i’ll grow a pair of legs
and sprout a new, thicker skin
